Keto Basics
Keto is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb lifestyle. It's not all about bacon and cheese as some people, including doctors assume.....but it can be. I see people doing keto all the time that only eat dairy and meat. This is just so not healthy. Keto, done properly, will be balanced and full of healthy fats such as avocados, olive and coconut oils, nuts, fatty fish and great cuts of beef, pork, and poultry. Heavy whipping cream and real butter too. Bacon and cheese can be incorporated into the keto lifestyle, just not as the primary source of fats.
Some of the basic equipment you'll need for keto will include:
1. A digital scale that can weigh in grams and ounces like this one, it's the one I have. Here
2. A good set of measuring cups and spoons. You'll need these for recipes and food and meal prep.
3. A digital thermometer
4. A grater, either a hand grater or an attachment on a food processor.
5. A variety of herbs and spices. You'll be using a lot of spices in recipes from all over the world.
6. A variety of oils, such as olive, coconut, and sesame. Do not buy corn, vegetable or canola oils.
7. Lard or Tallow for pan-frying and deep-frying. Yes, you will get to eat deep-fried foods. Yum!
6. A soup or stockpot with a lid at that is at least 8 quarts.

Optional Items
1. Cast iron skillet
2. Grill pan like this one. Here.
3. An assortment of storage containers for food prep storage and meal prep.
As you go along on this new lifestyle journey, you'll add things to your collection of foods, gadgets, and cookware. I have one small non-stick pan that I use for eggs and omelets, and for heating up small amounts of sauces and such. But you can use a good iron skillet or even your microwave if you like. You'll figure out what works for you, and what is simply "something nice to have".
At this point, I don't have a spiral maker, I just shred everything, but for the sake of making food porn look better, I think I'll be investing in one soon. It's really not a necessity, but it does make the dishes look nicer....it's up to you.
As I continue on this journey, I'll be adding to this list as things come up.
